I’ve been having a lot of fun lately creating LEGO POV-Ray models and I thought I’d share! Brink Link was nice enough to post instructions for the SDCC 2010 Cube Dudes which I had to model! I’ve finished R2-D2 and C-3PO and they look great!
Watermelon
Here is my take on LEGO Stores Watermelon Monthly Mini Model Build for July. This model screams Summer and one just didn’t seem enough. Playing around with better lighting, fog to soften light and JPEG artifacts, and a bit of focal blur thrown in for good measure.
New and Old Models
I uploaded a couple of LEGO renders today, a new one and an old one.
21006 White House
This is the wonderful 21006 White House. I love the look and did my best to recreate it, but I’m sure things aren’t quite the same. I didn’t finish the back yet, so don’t turn it around.
344 Bungalow
I found a number of old models from 1969 and rendered many last year, including this one. I finally got around to rendering larger a larger version with a better background (originally it has a seam in the back). If you search for this, you'll find that I fudged the trees and used something newer.
357 Fire Station
I rendered this a couple of weeks ago and thought I’d share. This is LEGO(R) Model 357 Fire Station with Vehicles from 1973. I’d like to create a more “action oriented” version in the future, but it is pretty nice to begin with. I personally like the middle engine with the two yellow rounds. It was the reason I rendered the model to begin with.
Flickr LEGO Fun
Flickr has become my new favorite place to share my LEGO creations. I tend to use Facebook for family and friends, mainly because that is what my family and friends use. But I digress. It is pretty easy now to use available tools, mine being Windows Live Photo Gallary, that allow easy publishing. That means more time building and less time cropping and uploading. In all, a good use of technology.
Fly Me To The Moon
Playing around with POV-Ray animation. This is LEGO model 367 Lunar Lander. I’m trying to be a bit more ambitious with camera sweeps, using easing functions and launching the lander into space!
Promotional Windmill 1976
I finally got around to trying my hand again at animating some of my virtual LEGO creations. I decided to go simple and animate the vanes and a simple camera pan for the promotional Windmill circa 1976. And, to really get my geek on, I uploaded it to YouTube.
5865 Mini Dumper
This is LEGO® model 5865 MiniDumper, part of the 2009 Creator series. I thought it looked really cool and was curious how close I could get to the original by building a virtual one.
LEGO and ZX81 Geocities Content Moved
Yahoo! will be shutting down Geocities tomorrow, 10/26/09, which means an end to my old LEGO and ZX81 website. Although I hadn’t updated those sites much since Yahoo! turned off ftp access, Geocities had remained my presence on the web for almost 12 years. Sad to say, it will be sad to see it go.
21005 Fallingwater
I’ve finished rendering 21005 Fallingwater in POV-Ray. Only 3 new bricks needed to be modeled so most of the time was spent inputing brick positions. I like this angle as it really shows off the waterfall.
21005 WIP
I don’t normally post “work in progress” but this one is pretty large and I wanted to show off what I had so far. It may not look like much yet, but I’ve finished my favorite part of the 21005 Fallingwater model: the waterfall.
21004 Guggenheim Museum
LEGO has launched a new Architecture line and I have to note that they are pretty impressive. So impressive, that I spent some time on vacation modeling the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in POV-ray.
Structure Synth Fun
Ran across some interesting images built using Structure Synth and rendered in POV-Ray. Thought it’d be cool to try some myself. I was playing some of the demo scenes, exporting them to POV-Ray for a high quality render. The image looked like hair and made me think LEGO minifig! I’ll definitely need to try some other stuff.
Ivy Lizard
Seems my lizard has been covered by some minor growth. I ran across this great ivy macro by hobBIT while hanging around the pov-ray.org forums and had to give it a try.
LEGO Moon Plates at Last
I’m still playing around with recreating old LEGO models. I spent time today modeling more road plates with the intention of creating a large town image. Unfortunately, after finishing the road plates, I got side tracked on completing the old space crater plate that for me, at the time, was a gray baseplate.
More POV-Ray and LEGO Fun
I have radiosity fever of late, converting or creating a number of new LEGO images utilizing POV-Ray 3.7 beta. Below are two new renders.
Cow
This is a “sort-of” recreation of the original cow image with the “Moo!” bubble. Unlike the original, this is a true brick cow and I’ve tried to make it more “realistic” then the original “flat” and shiny version. I had added the bubble with Paint Shop Pro on the first version. This time, I’m using CSG to do the same thing all in POV-Ray. Enjoy!
LEGO 7804 Lizard
Ran across this really interesting LEGO set and I just “had” to render it. I needed to model a few parts I didn’t have in my library. I also threw it into the same background I used on one of my Fire Truck renders. I might change the scene a bit to better show the texture on the front slope. In all not bad for a first render.

602 Fire Truck and Radiosity
I ran across this wonderful little macro by Jaime Vives Piquere to do Pseudo-HDRI lighting. I ran the macro with both POV-Ray 3.6 and 3.7 beta 31. I actually liked the 3.7 better. However, the image map I used is a bit lower resolution then I would like causing the pixilation in the background.

I’ve been updating my LEGO Renders in POV-Ray and one of the ones I recently “fixed” is Horses.
Getting a Little deviantART
I’ve been a lurker on deviantART for awhile now and decided to take the plunge and upload some of my ray traced images there. Since I tend to use the same alias at all my sites, you can now catch SafePit on deviantART. Normally I use Flickr for images, but since I tend to head over to deviantART for interesting wallpaper, I thought it worth the effort to join. I even uploaded a new version of my Snowman.

Well, it’s been over a year since I last played around with my Lego ray tracing and even longer since the last time I traced a new model. Well, ’tis the season to build new models! I did some searching around and found a model from 1969: 318 Windmill.
