MS Home Server

Microsoft has released a public beta of their Microsoft Home Server software. I’ve had various “home servers,” usually older computers, running various version of Windows and Linux. My current one is running Media Center, but it is also a desktop for my daughter.

In either case, MSHS sounds good on the surface. Basically, it is a stripped down version of Windows Server 2003. It is designed to be headless — no monitor or keyboard, so it comes with connect software to load on your PC’s. It basically serves as a backup and shared drive server. Just want I want!

Needless to say, I’ve decided I need to check this one out. I have the software downloaded, but I need to decide what computer I want to load it on. I’m thinking my old P3 won’t do — I doubt it will boot off DVD. And I’m not sure I want to rebuild my gaming box. Sigh. Maybe I’ll give this a try.
