Nearing the End of an Era

Needless to say, one of the many reasons I started Reid’s For Fun was because of Yahoo!’s neutering of GeoCities: removal of ftp and a paltry 4.2MB hourly limit. It was, however, my friend in the hey day of Internet growth and I am saddened at its (un)timely demise.

Although not my first web site, GeoCities was my first semi-permanent site. It has followed me around as I’ve traveled in life. Hard to believe, but it moved me past the days of modems, has ridden beside me through IDSL, and lingered with me on DSL. In the end, it appears that after October 26, 2009 Geocities will be no more.

For my part I’m actively archiving my old site. Yes, it is also on Archive.org and I have copies of the site in various states around. But as I’m still liking to the old site from this one, I need to get off my keister and get my Lego and ZX81 pages up and running. Until I do, I’m mirroring my site with wget, along with a few linked sites, so I have some base material to use.

Mark your calendars with me and prepare to bow a sad farewell to a piece of Internet History. It has been a great 13 years!
